40. Trim - Soulfood Vol 2 & 3 (2006, 2007)

Trim's series of Soul food mix-tapes came out of Grime downtime and a series of schisms. The failure of the industry to support grime following the first rush of chart hits, other than the increasing commercialism of Dizzee Rascal and Tinchy Strider, meant that many of the most talented MC's who reached their peak at the end of the decade had no structure to support major releases or gigs. This meant most MC's had to settle for local fame alone, never moving beyond MC clashes, self produced DVD packs and guest spots on commercial industry ventures, looking for a foot in. It also meant that that many of the greatest Grime moments remain in a disorganized sprawl of hard to get mix-tapes, YouTube vids, and rare vinyl pressings; the whole thing is crying out for a curator. Your move Soul Jazz! The industry was just too scared of this stuff. The whole scene came from the east end ghettos of Bow 'Where the good die young, and the ugly get cross-examined' and Tower Hamlets 'Where we help you get badges for disabled parking', Crazy Titch, one of Grimes most promising and a local heheartthrobad been charged with murder, his cousin Dirty Goodz found not guilty. Trim's cousin Roachie in prison, Trim's signature tune called Taliban. Despite being the most innovative music at the time, many would not touch it.

Into this non-supportive atmosphere Trim launched his solo career. He had acrimoniously left Roll Deep, citing his beef with Flowdan as the reason, his track The Lowdan covers this, suggesting Trim once looked up to this MC, but felt that Flowdan was not looking out for him. Trim also lists every MC with a patois Grime flow, putting Flowdan at the bottom of the list.
Despite Soulfood being a rag bag of odds and ends it remains the only place you can get to hear the full genius of Trim. Trim with his many aliases Trimbal, Shankvan, Trimothy, Osama Trim Laden, Trimski, Trimethius, Badboy Trim etc.. Produced by DVA, Wiley, Terror Danjah, Target, Mega, all the Grime producers of this era, Snapping electro funk, wheezing synth waves, ice cold hollow bashment beats surrounded by empty space.
Trim has the greatest flow of all British MC's, he does not rely upon Americanisms, or Dancehall particularly; he doesn't do speed rapping or overtly aggressive styles. Like MF Doom he leaves space in his bars, allowing time for his punchlines to hit, leaves more emphasis on his lyrics, loaded with meaning. Trim has a self deprecating edge that is welcome, there's no pretense at a millionaire lifestyle here 'Shake what mama gave you, even if she didn't'.

Trim is really funny, he has punchlines and catchphrases for days 'Teeth, gums, can you see 'em' , and his maniacal 'Lisssssten'!  On Signal 'If you didn't catch my name i'll throw it to you, and for those who can't catch i'll roll it to you'
Trim's known to battle any MC live, and will happily call out other MC's, on Full of Shit he disses Dizzee, and offers to battle him wearing his Matalan trackie!

Happily Trim, despite the odds has continued to self release mix-tapes, 14 volumes of Soulfood and 4 volumes of Monkey Features, along with the occasional 12" release. Until the long promised debut LP Crisis drops, these mix-tapes are the best place to hear what Trim has to offer.

Ship Arriving Too Late To Save A Jumble Sale Witch is a mix which covers the entirety of Frank Zappa's career. To achieve this each of us picked different eras from his massive discography to listen through and find stuff which we liked the best, along with some unexpected choices. Zappa's work can be intimidating due to it's volume and varying quality, and therefore it's difficult to know where to start.
We hope that this mix stands as a nice starting point for the uninitiated, to begin an adventure into the twisted world of Zappa.

Three Feet of Jumble and Rising is a 40 minute compilation featuring a selection of the original recordings sampled on De La Soul's debut album "3 Feet High and Rising".
Released amid the 1989 boom in gangsta rap, which gravitated towards hardcore, confrontational, violent lyrics, De La Soul's uniquely positive style made them an oddity.Their positivity meant many observers labelled them a "Hippie" group, based on their declaration of the "D.A.I.S.Y. Age" (da inner sound, y'all). Sampling artists as diverse as Johnny Cash, Hall & Oates, Steely Dan and The Turtles, 3 Feet High and Rising is often viewed as the stylistic beginning of 1990s alternative hip hop (and especially jazz rap), and is also credited with introducing the hip hop skit, a style of comedic sketch used both to introduce rap albums and as interludes between songs. Most of the tracks feature samples of around 4 to 5 original recordings, we have therefore focused on the originals which make up the more recognisable rhythm sections of the tracks. We have also programmed the pads with the original sample points on a couple of the songs so expect a little Jumble trickery. Its the D.A.I.S.Y Age with a jumble twist...........Enjoy!
